Working conditions at ASOS warehouse ‘to be investigated by MPs’…
After an initial investigation conducted by Buzzfeed News which described workers at the ASOS warehouse near Barnsley as being treated like ‘machines’, reports have indicated that MPs will be investigating further into the e-tailer and the management firm of the distribution centre, XPO’s practices.
Despite both parties denying the allegations, the severity of the security measures have gone as far as staff members being searched upon going to the toilet, as well as being made to take their shoes off during spot checks.
The chair of the House of Commons’ Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee, Ian Wright, said in a statement: “When I read the article, the reaction from me was this was ominously and depressingly familiar. We really want to eliminate this sort of working practice in Britain.”
The ASOS investigation is said to be a part of an upcoming general enquiry into employment practices entitled ‘Future World of Work’, to be launched in January and will also include investigations into other high profile retailers including Sports Direct and BHS.
