£1.4bn Brent Cross Shopping Centre expansion delayed by six months

Work on the expansion of the Brent Cross Shopping Centre won’t now start until January 2019, pushing the project back six months to an opening date of March 2023.

The ambitious £1.4bn project, led by Standard Life and Hammerson, will add 60 new restaurants, cinema, 7,600 parking spaces, a ‘living bridge’ and contribute to a re-developed Brent town centre.

Laing O’Rourke, which was tasked with delivering the £700m construction package, was due to break ground in July but delays in securing compulsory purchase orders has meant a shift in timetables. Sajid Javid, then secretary of state for communities and local government, originally signed the order in December 2017.

A JV between Graham/Hochtief is believed to have secured the first major contract for infrastructure works, which is expected to last 18 months.

Brent Cross Shopping Centre has been a fixture in North West London since it opened in 1976, with the expansion project set to double the site’s footprint.

As part of the project John Lewis is investing heavily in its store, which has been part of the centre for more than 40 years.

Tim Harrison, director of store design and development at John Lewis, said last year: “We’re delighted to have signed a new lease with Hammerson and Aberdeen Standard Investments and are excited to be embarking on a full refurbishment of our Brent Cross shop. Our plans will allow us to showcase our latest thinking in shop design, creating a more modern space for shoppers with customer experience at its heart.”

The wider refurbishment of Brent Cross is being undertaken to create more space and fend off competition from new sites like the Westfield centres either side of it in West and East London.
